Thankful for friends...

I worked with someone's voice earlier in the week. I don’t want to get into all the technicals, but in singing what you hear a lot of is, “breath support”. A vocal coach will teach singers how to utilize low breath and sing correctly by singing from the diaphragm. Without the proper support, our voice goes flat. So, in the middle of this person singing, I heard the voice go flat. I said, “Come on now. Low breath – support your note. It’s going flat.”

Then, when the person left, I had an epiphany. There are times when my life seems flat. Whether I’m going through the motions, feeling a dry season, or just not feeling very encouraged, I seek the support of my friends (my Savior, my wife, my leaders, my buddies – you who are reading this blog). Without that support system in place, I'm flat - kind of dull really. Much like the quality of a note someone would sing, without breath support, something is not right.

I’ve always been a pretty independent child (just ask my mom) – sometimes to a fault and I’m still working on that flaw in me. I have a tendency to sing the notes of life without proper support. I’m still learning – I think I’ll always be in process. Forgive me if I don’t call on you enough or tell you often how much you mean to me. I want to be better at it.

I guess this is my way of saying, “Thank you for being my support. And when I’m not singing all the right notes in life, thanks for gently letting me know I’m off-key. Your influence in my life is invaluable. And for my new acquaintances, I look forward to building a great friendship!”
