A Lesson from Dassah

Well, it’s hard to believe, but I now have a seven month old! There are pictures on our walls, at home, of the day Dassah was born. It’s difficult to imagine that was seven months ago!

Dassah gave Nat and I an amazing memory March 6, Saturday, the day after she crossed the threshold of seven months. We have tried a number of times to let Dassah crawl. We’d give her tummy time, to get her used to lifting herself up on her knees and hands, but she would get frustrated and lay back on the ground. At times it looked promising, but then after giving it all she had, she’d give up. Dassah never seemed to like the tummy position. She always wanted to stand, sit up or be held. Holding her, we’d put one hand supporting her body and our other hand below her feet. She’d get so excited thinking she was standing up. We’ve done this since she was 4 months old and every time she’d flail her arms around in excitement.

We didn’t know what to expect when the time came for Dassah to either crawl or walk – we were just excited to see the progression. It’s a little nerve wrecking to think about Dassah crawling/walking, but I want to see my daughter progress. I can see she wants to also because she gets so frustrated when we put her on the ground to crawl. She doesn’t even want to be in my arms some of the time – she pushes me away as her body bends forward, as to say, “I want down.”

So Saturday, March 6, Nat was giving Dassah a chance to crawl, but Dassah wanted more than to crawl. In typical Dassah fashion, she got frustrated. I could hear Dassah crying out in frustration from the other room, where I was studying. After a few minutes of Nat talking, coaching and encouraging Dassah, I heard Nat, with excitement say, “Yeah Dassah! I’m so proud of you! That is awesome! You are going to have to show Papi what you can do! He's is going to be so excited!”

I got up from the other room, walked to living room, grabbed the video camera and this is what I saw: (click on the link below)

What a great day. What a wonderful memory. We are very proud of our daughter! But, what an even greater picture of the scripture coming to life in my brain, Hebrews 12

1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

I don’t know where this blog finds you. You might be in a good spot, but if you ever get in a bad spot and need encouragement, allow the newness of a little girl’s experience to give you the encouragement to move forward. If you are in a bad spot, allow it to do the same. There is a grandstand of heavenly witnesses cheering you on…just like Nat and I were Dassah in her accomplishment!
