There’s Nothing Wrong with Looking, Right? Pt. 2

Sexual sin is like a sucker punch to families. To spouses, it takes their wind out, it creates unstable footing of what seemed secure, it tests patience, questions solemn vows, and knocks out trust, leaving both parties dazed and confused. Home; what was once a safe-place is now a war-zone! If kids are involved, parents are now forced to concoct stories of why mommy and daddy are not getting along, because they want to minimize the fallout and protect the kids. It’s important to protect the kids, but it’s sad that this discussion has to exist in the first place. And you might say, “We are still talking about a look right?”

Yes. Looking is only the beginning to an impure heart, to impure thinking, and more often leads to impure acting (See previous post for "looking" definition). It always starts with an “innocent” look and I struggle with people who downplay it. They see it as a harmless past-time sport, but it’s rarely harmless and if you were honest in expressing your thoughts to your spouse or who you are dating it could create a wound where trust seeps. I think the best description of its progression is found in the Bible, James 1:14-15 ESV, “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”

So, what’s Jesus’ response? He doesn’t mince words, beat around the bush, or tippy-toe around our next step. In essence he says, “Kill it before it kills you. Don’t pretend it doesn’t exist. Get serious and get rid of it.”

"If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.” – Matthew 5:29-30 ESV

Of course He was speaking figuratively, but his emphasis was meant to be shocking. He must know something about the destruction of all that we love when we entertain something as “innocent” as a look. So, if you’re struggling in this area, there’s help to kill it before it kills you. Here are some options:
· – porn addiction help
· – teens, men, spousal help
· – I’d love to see if I can help either direct you or walk with you
