Following Jesus Requires Sacrifice – pt. 3

[Matthew 16:21-26] Imagine if one of your closest friends said this to you, “I will suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed…”  And really, he’s more than one of your close friends, but a person who you gave up everything to follow.  You’ve grown close to him.  You’ve shared deep secrets of your life with him.  He knows you, like no one else does.  Let me help you REALLY understand this.  Let’s just say it was your sibling who said this.  He says, “Listen, I’m going to be beaten and tortured really bad.  People are going to say that I’m a loser and call me names, really bad names.  And the people who will do this are the police, the church, and some in our government.  It’s going to get so bad that they’re going to kill me.”  What would your reaction be?  Would you try to protect your sibling?  Would you want him to go into hiding?  Let’s see how one of Jesus’ disciples reacted, verse 22,

And Peter took [Jesus] aside and began to rebuke him, saying, "Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you."

Peter had a way of saying and doing things that I’m sure everyone else was thinking, but no one had the guts to say or do.  So, Peter probably pulled Jesus aside and said, “Hey, Jesus don’t talk like that.  Don’t confess it.  Name it and claim it.  You’re too blessed to be stressed; too anointed to be disappointed.  This is crazy talk!”  He was trying to protect his friend.  His motives were pure, but he wasn’t thinking like Jesus; he was thinking like Peter.  So, what was Jesus’ response? Verse 23,

But he turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man."

Whoa!  Jesus called Peter Satan! (to be continued…)
